SO WHAT'S IT

ALL ABOUT?

Scrambling suits anyone with reasonable hillwalking fitness, a good head for heights and an adventurous spirit! To the experienced hillwalker, scrambling and mountaineering offers the next obvious step, bridging the gap for many between walking and climbing. This is the start of your mountaineering career!

This 2 day course focuses on developing the movement and technical skills required for tackling the terrain on Grade 1 type scrambles such as found on Crib Goch and the North Ridge of Tryfan. Both of these routes involve steep and often exposed ground, where your judgement and good route choice is important. Snowdonia has some incredible mountain terrain, offering exciting, adventurous routes to some of the best summits in the UK

Over the 2 days we will look at:

  • Planning a mountain day

  • Guidebooks, maps and grading system

  • Basic scrambling techniques and movement skills

  • Choosing a safe route and assessing risk

  • Assisting and safeguarding each other

  • Simple emergency ropework for scrambles in ascent and descent

  • Mountain navigation

  • Mountain weather - how the weather affects our route planning and choice during the day

  • Emergency procedures in case of an incident

  • Choice and use of equipment
