rock climbing in Costa Blanca
Soak up some winter sunshine whilst exploring some of the best rock climbing the Costa Blanca has to offer.
SO WHAT'S IT
ALL ABOUT?
Costa Blanca has long been a traditional Winter climbing venue. When our usual areas are soaking wet and freezing cold, then the Costa Blanca in usually still enjoying the warm Mediterranean sunshine. Renowned for its great limestone sport climbing, good variety of crags and often easy roadside locations.
We particularly like the vast range of climbing on offer, from low to high grade sports climbs, long multi pitch sports routes, big trad climbs, ridge scrambling and even a spot of Via Ferrata.
Literally just beyond the sandy beaches is a different world to the one we think of when we picture Costa Blanca. One of soaring mountains, rocky ridges and accessible crags all nestled amongst the pine forests, wild rosemary and olive groves.
The aim of this six day visit is quite simple, to explore as much of the climbing as we can. The broad plan will be to treat the week as a classic Winter Sun climbing week, searching out the best routes, the sunshine, and absorbing some of that laid back Spanish atmosphere.
Costa Blanca is renowned for it's 300 plus days of sunshine a year, however with all these trips the weather is the determining factor and may allow us to follow a broad plan or force us to to change. It’s always an adventure, but the key factors are that we stay safe, enjoy the week and cover as much rock as we can. We prefer to keep the plan very open to allow us to make decisions compatible to the conditions on the crag.
WHAT TYPE OF ROCK IS THERE?
Costa Blanca translates to White Coast, all the surrounding rock is limestone. The area is vast and very assessable.
WHAT'S THE WEATHER LIKE?
The best time to visit for sport climbing is from September to May, as during this time the air temperature is much cooler and ideal for climbing and generally rain isn't a problem.
Daytime temps in February, for example, can reach as high as 23ÂşC with crystal clear blue skies. Evenings can be a little chilly.
GETTING TO AND STAYING IN SPAIN
As we only offer instruction, I don't arrange your flights and accommodation. You can fly to Alicante (the nearest airport) from most UK airports.
Due to it being the traditional holiday low season, accommodation in the area is plentiful and reasonably priced. We are usually based in the Finestrat area and can chat more about the location on booking.
WHAT STYLE OF CLIMBING IS IT?
The crags range from single pitch bolted sports routes in low to high grades to long multi pitch sports routes, big trad climbs, long mountain ridge scrambles and even a spot of Via Ferrata. The crags are a mixture of coastal cliffs and inland mountains.
WHAT'S THE AREA LIKE?
Outside of the major towns, the mountains are extremely quiet, especially in the traditional holiday low season. It's easy to forget while sipping a coffee in a little mountain village, to that the hustle and bustle of the big holiday towns are only 15 mins drive away. This makes getting supplies incredibly easy.
Inland you will find pine covered mountains, almond tree fields, olive and orange groves, on the coast, it's endless sandy beaches and vast cliffs rising out the sea.
